Basically, I can only set a resolution that goes from 640x480 to 1024x768, many youtube videos appear to be weird looking. I'm sure (as it has always been working on windows) that my screen supports resolutions up to 1600x1200, so has anyone of you guys got a hint or two about what's going on here? You can try several things: 1) Try changing your VGA cable 2) Try using DVI port if you display supports it. Even consider getting a new screen supporting the DVI input. You'll have much crispier screen. For me, I can't stand VGA connections anymore. 3) You can try entering a modeline manually (since driver can't read modes automatically using EDID). Normally, each display has specific parameters to use. You can find it from the manual of he display. You need to check the frequencies etc for a specific resolution. However, I found some typical examples, maybe one of them could work for you: 1600120060 Hz75 kHzModeLine "1600x1200" 162.00 1600 1664 1856 2160 1200 1201 1204 1250 +HSync +VSync1600120065 Hz81.25 kHzModeLine "1600x1200" 175.50 1600 1664 1856 2160 1200 1201 1204 1250 +HSync +VSync1600120070 Hz87.5 kHzModeLine "1600x1200" 189.00 1600 1664 1856 2160 1200 1201 1204 1250 +HSync +VSync1600 120075 Hz93.75 kHzModeLine "1600x1200" 202.50 1600 1664 1856 2160 1200 1201 1204 1250 +HSync +VSync1600120085 Hz106.25 kHzModeLine "1600x1200" 229.50 1600 1664 1856 2160 1200 1201 1204 1250 +HSync +VSync Try the first one first, then if it works, try the next one. The last one has the best refresh rates, good for the eyes, but very few professional displays support such refresh rates. The first seems OK for most 1600x1200 screens. This site can give you some more insight: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Modeline_Database and this site: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Working_with_Modelines This modeline shall be written in your xorg.conf and then the X system shall be restarted like this: 1) click CTRL+ALT+F1 2) login as root 3) give the following commands: service xdm stop service xdm start Note that xorg does minimal use of xorg.conf these days, so in Pardus 2011, there's normally no xorg.conf as /etc/X11/xorg.conf but instead, there's a directory called /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d and I don't have an idea how it works. Maybe the best is to let nvidia-xconfig to generate a classic xorg.conf and then edit it to insert the modeline similar to the below example, in the monitor section: Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" #this should be equal to the name of monitor defined elsewhere inside xorg.conf VendorName "Unknown" #you can put what you want here ModelName "Unknown" #you can put what you want here HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0 VertRefresh 56.0 - 76.0 * ModeLine "1600x1200" 162.00 1600 1664 1856 2160 1200 1201 1204 1250 +HSync +VSync* Option "DPMS" EndSection Best is to find the Good luck! -- Emre -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In short he was very negative at the dualboot experience. But it was ok as a singe operating system in the hardrive. But it seems to destroy other partitions if you got other operating system installed. Well, the standard disclaimer, it is better to use the distro kernel since it contains lots of fixes and modifications, so I suggest switching to 2011 if you need an up to date kernel (and if your hardware supports, the 64bit edition preferably). > I have an issue connecting to my wireless network with the > new kernel. Just don't forget to add "&" to the end of it, like /usr/sbin/rfkill unblock all & If anything goes wrong, you can start the system in safe mode (press F3 in grub menu) and revert the changes. -- Onur K???k Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens From ajikai at aim.com Wed Mar 23 21:43:51 2011 From: ajikai at aim.com (Ajikai Limphu) Date: Wed, 23 Mar 2011 09:43:51 -1000 Subject: [Pardus-users] Upgrading Pardus from 2009.2 to 2011 Message-ID: <201103230943.51632.ajikai@aim.com> Hi, I would love to upgrade Pardus to 2011, but the installer CD freezes my Lenovo S12 notebook. The network subsystem change may be problematic, but I guess it is migrated fine by the migrate-comar-network-profiles tool we have written. There are a few glitches with kde configs ( a symlink in $HOME/.kde -> $HOME/.kde4 is required) but are small and will be addressed asap. Distupdate tracker bug is here [1], you can follow up what is fixed and how by reading its dependency bugs. I believe there won't be much to do by hand though. Will there be a PAE kernel? Message-ID: <4D8D0B2C.5090604@att.net> Greetings - Thanks for another superb Pardus edition. I am running a couple of the new 64 bit installs and also a 686 of 2011. I know the upgrade tool is soon coming. My question is - will there also be a PAE kernel for 686? I run 2009.2 with the PAE kernel and it is not in the 2011 repos. No big deal as I can always run 2011 _64 but the PAE kernel in 2009.2 works quite nicely. By the way - the Pardus upgrade tool is fantastic, something that other distros have only even begun to think about. It is obvious that the devs making up Pardus are certainly far beyond competent. I also appreciate GRUB .98 although GRUB 1.98 is now pretty stable. Since I also use LiLo, I prefer a boot mgr that is not complicated. But, I can use any, but I just wanted to say that I do appreciate the older GRUB. I appreciate your efforts.. k.v. Hi, I have this card on my netbook. b43 can't connect ieee8021x type connections so I'm using "wl" module instead and it works fine.
